Approximately less than a minute reading time.

SMS Meaning

The meaning of SMS is "Short Message Service", it is something nearly everybody uses daily. Usually, people refer to SMS as text messaging.

SMS are created through 7-bit encoding or Unicode. Both differ slightly - our SMS Length Calculator explains the differences, and how long your messages can be. It may be of no use to you, but I think it's quite interesting.

Fun facts

  • The first ever message sent via SMS was from Vodafone, in the United Kingdom on 3 December 1992.
  • By 2010, 3.5 billion people used SMS daily. This number will have risen since, too.
  • The market for SMS is worth approximately $100 billion.

MMS Meaning

The meaning of MMS is "Multimedia Messaging Service", this is similar to SMS, but they allow you to add Multimedia content (like images and videos) to the body of the message.

Fun facts

  • MMS capable phones were first released in 2002.
  • Norway leads the way with MMS; over 84% use MMS once a week.
  • Since Smartphones, MMS has increased by 70% globally.

A couple of our clients from our text reminder service have asked us the differences between the two, so we thought we'd put together an informative article. We hope you've found the information interesting!
